WINTERTIME LOVE

By Jenni Ceurvels

Winter has always been
A time of withdrawal.
Solitude,
A retreat within,
The quietness of bare trees and snow.

As the earth sleeps, so I sleep.
Then with the spring I wake
Seeking out new loves,
Reviving old ones.
To spend the summer warmth loving
Beneath the sky
Till autumn brings retreat again.

So pass the years,
But this year turned around.
My summer was a wasteland of the heart
But now in winter's bitter chill
A lover comes and so my garden blossoms in the snow.

Warm in our separate houses,
You on your island,
I on the mainland's cold east coast,
We talk and write.
Words and voices fly Electronic sparks
Through miles of cable
Fast as light.
Silent in their transit
They burst upon my waiting eyes and ears
Heavy with meaning,
Alive with emotion.
They bring us together for an instant then are gone,
Ephemerata,
Spark and fade.

One day the bus will bring you
Its slow lumbering progress far outpaced
By our communicating electrons.
We will stand together, face to face.
We will touch, hold hands, smile.
Electrons made flesh.
We will become completely real to one another,
Take shape and depth.

And will the colors that I see
Match the pigments of my imagination?
And will the voice I hear still sound so sweet
Without the telephone's distortion?

I count the days declining till we meet,
I watch the hours and minutes slowly crawl
I wait to see you,
Wait to meet you,
Wait to love you,
Soul to soul.
