Last Saturday night [July 21], the lovely and talented Nancy Cramer and I took in a late night showing of The Dark Knight Rises. Needless to say, the theater was crawling with cops. This was just a day or so after the shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Since it was after ten pm and since there was a showing beginning every 15 minutes, our theater was relatively empty.

In the tradition of BATMAN BEGINS, the production was superb. Christian Bale is by far the best actor to portray Batman so far. I'm always happy to see Gary Oldman, and for once not as a criminal but as Gotham's chief of police, Commissioner Gordon. The lovely Anne Hathaway was very sexy as the CatWoman and her interpretation is quite different from that of Michelle Pfeiffer. The unexpected cameo of Liam Neeson was a welcome surprise. I have been a fan of his since DARKMAN. The french actress, Marion Cotillard, as the society woman Miranda was the right choice. After seeing her in MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and CONTAGION, I believe I am in love with her

The movie picks up where BATMAN BEGINS left off, with Batman disappearing after most people in Gotham believe him to be the murderer of Harvey Dent, the district attorney of Gotham City. Of course, his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, has also gone into seclusion. But the appearance of the new villain Bane, a monster of a man who wishes to destroy Gotham because he believes it to be corrupt, run by decadent people, and the home of Bruce Wayne who was mentored by Ra’s Al Goul, the same man who mentored Bane, and who Bane believes killed Goul.

The actor Tom Hardy is impressive and frightening as Bane, a mixture of the combined evil of Darth Vader and the Joker. Both the breathing mask that he wears and his enormous size and strength remind the viewer very much of Darth Vader and the pure evil emanating from him more than equals that of the Joker.

At first, the CatWoman is seen as Batman's enemy but later on in the film she becomes his accomplice and partner, a kind of female Robin.

I cannot say more about the plot without giving the whoe story away but let me say this. The film is EPIC. The disaster scenes are larger than life on the only place where this film will be effective, the big theater screen. As a video or TV showing, the grandeur of the film will be diminished more than with most other movies.

I am a big fan of comic book hero movies and this is one of the best I have seen so far. I encourage you to see it if action movies and loud explosions turn you on.
